Beautiful Castles in Washington

Beautiful castles located in the state of Washington including two high schools in Tacoma.

Did you know there are beautiful castles in Washington? Most of these castles were built by millionaires in Washington but a couple were built by ordinary dreamers and two of these castles were built as high schools by a public school board in Tacoma. Most are open to the public today and are great places to visit.

Stadium High School in Tacoma

Stadium High School is located at 111 North E Street in Tacoma, Washington right above Commencement Bay in the Puget Sound. In 1891 the Northern Pacific Railroad began building a luxury French chateau hotel on the spot but the financial panic of 1893 brought construction to a halt and in 1904 the Tacoma School District bought the site and hired architect Frederick Heath to build Stadium High School here. Heath stuck to the chateau design and built a magnificent looking high school that still operates today and is a historical landmark in Tacoma.

Manresa Castle in Port Townsend

Manresa Castle is located at 7th and Sheridan Street in Port Townsend, Washington at the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. The castle was built in 1892 by prominent businessman Charles Eisenbeis and his wife Kate. Jesuits bought the place in 1927 and used Manresa Castle as a training college until 1968 when new owners converted the castle to a hotel and restaurant. Manresa Castle remains a hotel, restaurant and lounge today that is popular for weddings and celebration parties.

Congdon Castle in Yakima

Congdon Castle is located along Nob Hill Blvd. in Yakima, Washington. The castle was built by lawyer and capitalist Chester Congdon in 1916 as a summer home for his family who lived at the magnificent Glensheen Estate right on Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. Today Congdon Castle is a private residence with fruit orchards on the grounds and is called Westhome by its owners.

Thornewood Castle in Lakewood

Thornewood Castle is located on Thornewood Lane in Lakewood, Washington south of Tacoma right on American Lake. The castle was built in 1911 by Chester Thorne one of the founders of the Port of Tacoma.Thornewood Castle contains 27,000 square feet of living space including 28 bedrooms and 22 bathrooms. Parts of the castle were imported from an estate in England. Today Thornewood Castle is a bed and breakfast that also is used for mystery theater dinners, weddings, theme evenings, masquerade balls, film screenings and the 2002 Stephen King TV movie or miniseries Rose Red was filmed at Thornewood Castle.

Alexander's Castle in Fort Worden

Alexander's Castle is located in Fort Worden State Park at 200 Battery Way in Port Townsend, Washington not too far from Manresa Castle at the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. Alexander's Castle was built by the Reverend John Alexander beginning in 1883 as a home for he and his prospective wife from Scotland. Once the castle was finished Reverend Alexander traveled to Scotland for his prospective wife only to discover she had married someone else. Alexander used the castle as a temporary residence but Alexander's Castle was soon in the US Army's hands as the Army constructed Fort Worden on the grounds beginning in 1897. Today Fort Worden is a state park and Alexander's Castle can be rented out to sleep in from Washington State Parks. Two movies An Officer and a Gentleman and The Ring were filmed at Fort Worden State Park.

White Salmon River Castle in Husum

The White Salmon River Castle is located at 92 Fordyce Road in Husum, Washington about 6 miles up the river from the Columbia River Gorge. The White Salmon River Castle can be rented out today for special events and weddings.

Hoquiam's Castle in Hoquiam

Hoquiam's Castle is located at 515 Chenault Ave in Hoquiam, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. Really more a Victorian home than a castle, Hoquiam's Castle was built by lumber millionaire Robert Lytle in 1900 and the castle remained in the family until the late 1950's Today Hoquiam's Castle is a bed & breakfast that is a state and national historic site.

Lincoln High School in Tacoma

Lincoln High School is located at 701 South 37th Street right at Lincoln Park in Tacoma, Washington. Built in 1914 by architect Frederick Heath for the Tacoma Public School System Lincoln High School is a historical landmark in Tacoma today and still a functioning high school.

There is another castle located in the town of Union Gap, the old Charmichael castle and it is on the national historic register.
