Fun Things to Do in San Diego, California in January

January is a good time to be in San Diego as it is the month the City celebrates the annual gray whale migration culminating in a free family festival on 21st January. It is also the month the San Diego Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Fair is held.

The weather in San Diego in January is unpredictable with temperatures varying from a high of 65 degrees farenheit and a low of 48 degrees farenheit. Although the month sees an average of 72% sunshine it is also the month you get the highest rainfall of the year with an expected 2.11 inches falling during January. Despite that it is the month that is the most fun with two major events taking place for all the family to enjoy.

The biggest of these is the annual San Diego Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Festival. 2012 is the 30th year it has been held in the City which is also celebrating the 40th year of service by the San Diego Chinese Center for the Ten Community.

Chinese New Year is January 23rd and 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. This free family event takes place in Downtown San Diego in Third Avenue and J Street on Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th January from 10am-5pm.

There is an Opening Ceremony on both days at 10am and on the Saturday it includes a performance by the Lucky Lion Dancers. On the Sunday the Lion Dance is performed by the Three Treasures Cultural Arts Society.

The spectacular Lantern Parade, Dragon Dance and Lion Dancing takes place on both days between 12noon and 12.40pm. As well as the parade and the dancing the highlight of the Festival is the Chinese Balancing Act by Sha Sha Lou which takes place on Saturday 28th from 2pm-2.25pm and on Sunday 29th between 1.10pm and 1.35pm and there will be Chinese and Thai food available as well as a wide selection of stalls.

The other free family event is the San Diego Whale Festival which takes place on January 21st between 11am and 3pm at Port Pavilion on the Broadway Pier in Downtown San Diego.

This is the fourth year the Festival has been held and it is a family community event offering a wide variety of interactive and hands-on displays which will capture the imagination of children and adults alike.

The Whale Festival is a celebration of the whale migration season, every year thousands of Californian Gray Whales travel along the San Diego coastline during their annual migration which takes place between December and April.

Attractions at the Big Bay Whale Festival include

  • A walk-through gray whale
  • Live sea creatures

There is also live music on the Whale of a Stage featuring the James Gibson Band, Nadro John and Jinna Williams.

As well as these two major events San Diego celebrates the whale migration throughout the whole month of January with Big Bay Whale Days.
