Anchorage is a diverse city, densely populated and home to almost half of all Alaskans. The average January temperature is 20F and the average July temperature is 65F. Six different mountain ranges can be seen from Anchorage. Tourism is a major industry in Anchorage with over one million visitors each year.

CHURCHES

There are over 100 churches in Anchorage. Church goers have a choice of Baptist, Bible, Catholic, Church of Christ, Community, Episcopal, Full Gospel, Greek Orthodox, Independent, Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, non denominational, Orthodox Church of America (OCA), Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Reformed, Russian Orthodox, Science of Mind, and Seventh Day Adventist. Anchorage is also home to the (Catholic) Archdiocese of Alaska and the Orthodox Diocese of Alaska.

EDUCATION

Students in Anchorage from kindergarten through 12th grade attend the Anchorage School District. The school district encompasses 58 elementary schools, 10 middle schools and eight high schools. The University of Anchorage and the Alaska Pacific University both service the Anchorage area. Residents may also choose the Alaska Career College.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

The three most likely emergencies one might encounter in Anchorage are: earthquakes, wildfire, and extreme winter weather. Regardless of the emergency, Anchorage is well tended for in terms of police, fire, ambulance and hospital crews.

Police

The Anchorage Police Department is located at 4501 Elmore Road. A substation - the Eagle River sub station - is open limited hours.

Fire

Over 300 men and women stand to serve the Anchorage community as part of the Anchorage Fire Department. While the Department is officially located at 100 East 4th Avenue, there are 15 fire stations within the Department. Of those 15, 13 have specialties such as HazMat, Back Country Rescue, Urban Search & Rescue and Wildland Ops. The firefighters utilize the Anchorage Regional Fire Training Center to maintain current skills and learn new ones. The Training Center is located at 1140 Airport Heights Drive.

Ambulance

Ambulances fall under the Fire Department umbrella. There are eight fire stations that also house ambulances.

Government

Anchorage is divided into 14 legislative seats in the Alaska Legislature. The districts areL Baxter Bog, Bayshore/Klatt, Campbell/Independence Park, Chugach State Park, Downtown/Rogers Park, East Spenard, Huffman/Oceanview, Lore/Abbott, Midtown/Taku, Mt. View/Wonder, Muldoon, Sand Lake, Turnagain/Inlet View and finally University/Airport Heigts.

Human Services

The Community Health division offers not only hospitals but also women’s shelters, animal shelters, immunization clinics, reproductive health clinics, the Salvation Army and senior citizen programs. It also includes the Brother Francis Shelter. The shelter is a temporary shelter for both men and women. It offers a night meal and assistance getting the help and referrals they may need.

Newspapers

The Anchorage Daily News services the city and surrounding area. Other newspapers include the Alaska Journal of Commerce, the Anchorage Chronicle, the Anchorage Press, the Bristol Bay Times, and the Dutch Harbor Fisherman. The Associated Press (AP) also has an office in Anchorage.

There are 14 bus routes that service Anchorage through the People Mover bus system. AnchorRIDES is available for seniors and those with disabilities. Riders may pay by cash, tokens or passes. Passes can be obtained at the Downtown Transit Center, the Dimond Transit Center, as well as at the various libraries.

Yes, Jeanne, it is perfectly OK to edit an article that has already been published to include links. It's perfectly OK to edit any article in any way that improves its quality and usefulness. The only absolute no-no is editing a title because the original title is most likely already listed on the search engines and changing a title leaves a broken link.

That radio station list would have been nice to have on my last trip to Anchorage.
