Best Places for Scenic Photography in Aurora, Colorado

Just east of Denver, Colorado, and technically a suburb of the stateÂ’s capital, Aurora sits at the junction of two major geographical regions. Here the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains and, as you can imagine, this makes for some impressive spots for scenic photography, with many different settings to choose from.

Amateur and professional photographers alike need little more than an open field with a clear westward view to snap up some incredible pictures. At all times of the day the view can be spectacular with the jagged Rockies rising in the background. Whether snowcapped, sometimes even in the summer, or silhouetted against a striking sunset, the mountains supply photographers with a scenic dream come true. A zoom lens enables dramatic pictures of the downtown Denver skyline against the mountains. Creative photographers can have fun capturing the nuances of a rainstorm against the tall peaks, with contrasting light and dark, sunshine and rainclouds, and even an occasional lightning bolt, all in the same scene.

Aurora’s more than a hundred parks also offer terrific photo-taking opportunities. The city’s four-season climate means tremendous variety – spring flowers, autumn colors, snowy winter landscapes and verdant summer scenes. Nature trails abound, as do ponds. You can capture everything from a frolicking beach scene at Aurora Reservoir to the dramatic and somber beauty of the prairie at the Plains Conservation Center. Just about every Aurora park supplies beautiful collections of trees and plants to delight any nature photographer.

Colorado skies are ever changing. Intense rain and snow clouds, exquisite colors at sunset, plenty of rainbows and deep, bright shades of blue – all these elements supply excellent opportunities for sky watchers and photographers. Clouds in this part of the world are among the most impressive anywhere. With the dry climate and high elevation, atmospheric conditions are excellent for either daytime or nighttime sky photography.

For additional scenic photography spots in Aurora, consider the following. DeLaney Farm provides a historic round barn and 130 acres of open space with trails. A beautiful setting from June to mid-September is the Aurora Greenhouse and Flower Garden on Potomac Street, where colorful daylilies, petunias and other flowers are planted each year. Wildlife pictures can be snapped up at the Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch. If you’re patient, and lucky, you can capture photos of painted turtles and great horned owls.

Another fabulous spot is Bluff Lake Nature Center. You can really see geology at work here, as the bluffs were formed over time by streams of water flowing down from the Rockies and depositing soil in the area. A wide variety of flora and fauna exist for your camera lens to find, including willows and cottonwoods, bats and red foxes. As always, don’t forget to point your camera to the west for stunning mountain views.
