The Oregon Caves National Monument is a fabulous place to visit.  The monument occupies 480 acres of beautiful scenery.  There are many exotic plants located here.  You will also see a Douglas fir tree that is supposed to have the largest diameter trunk of any Douglas fir in Oregon.  The forest area contains four hiking trails that are great.  There are marble caves that are located below ground.

The Oregon Caves National Monument is located in the wooded Klamath Mountains, which are in southwest Oregon.  The Oregon Caves National Monument has around 3 miles of marble caves that you can explore.  There are old forests and a historic lodge.

The historic lodge at Oregon Caves National Monument is one of Oregon’s most beautiful lodges.   The Chateau as it is called was opened in 1934 and is a six story hotel that has a great dining room.  There is also a coffee shop that makes you feel like you have gone back in time to the 1930’s.  The Chateau has 23 beautifully decorated rooms.

The cuisine at the Chateau is fabulous.  They use locally grown produce, meats and wines.  The gift gallery has gifts that are made locally.  Local furniture builders make the furniture in the rooms.  The soap and shampoo are also made locally.  You can visit the Chateau from May through October.

There are four hiking trails that cover 5 miles of area.   This area is beautiful and a hikers dream.  The Oregon Cave National Monument is open all year.  There are hiking and snow activities in the winter.  You can only see the inside of the Oregon Caves by taking a guided tour.

The Oregon Caves National Monument was discovered on a cold day in 1874.  If you take a tour of the caves there are a few rules you must follow.  You cannot take a flash camera with you. The tight quarters prohibit backpacks.  Yu must not touch the cave walls if possible.  Your tour will usually be ½ mile long where you will see chambers and rooms with great formations.  To make your tour more interesting many of the rooms and chambers have fascinating names like the Imagination Room, soda straw stalagmites, the Petrified Forest Room, the Banana Grove, the River Stix, Paradise Lost, the Ghost and many more.  You will love your tour and it will be an experience you will not soon forget.

There have been many fossils found in the caves and in 1996, an 8,000 year old fossil of a jaguar was found.  A grizzly bear fossil was found that is much older.  Carbon dating says the fossil of the bear is about 50,000 years old.  Touring the caves is an awesome experience.

You can visit the Caves form mid March through the Thanksgiving weekend.  The tour hours are subject to change depending on the season and weather.  The tours usually start between 8am and 10 am and they end at 4pm.  A visit to the Oregon Caves is a trip you will not soon forget, as it is awesome.
